1. An earthworm may burrow up to 1.5 meters below the ground. 2. An earthworm's tunnel aerates the soil and creates an underground irrigation system for plant roots. 3. Charles Darwin referred to earthworms as "nature's plow." 4. Darwin felt that earthworms may have played a larger role in the world than any other animal on the planet. 5. An earthworm has 2 mechanisms of movement. The first is the worm's muscles, which expand and contract to pull the worm along. The second means of transportation are a series of bristles on the bottom of the worm, which act as small legs to propel the slimy little guy to where he is going. 5. To determine which end is an earthworm's head, rub your finger along his underbelly. If his tummy is smooth, and you cannot feel the bristles, you are running your finger toward his tail. If you can feel the little bristles, you are moving your finger toward his head. 6. Worms eat dead organic matter. 7. A large worm is strong enough to pull an entire dead leaf into his burrow. 8. About 3000 species of earthworms have been identified. 9. The word "worm" is derived from the archaic term "wyrm." This word was used to describe any animal that was long and slithered. 10. An earthworm may be referred to as an 'average earth animal,' because approximately half of the creatures on the planet are less complex in anatomy, and approximately half are moreso. 11. On average, earthworms plow through (digest and poop) 16,000 pounds of soil! 12. Earthworm poop is referred to as "castings." 13. Earthworm castings are rich in nitrogen, calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium. This combination provides and ideal plant food. 14. An earthworm's bristles are known as "satae". 15. An earthworm's satae can be used to help anchor it down should a predator attempt to pull it from its burrough. 16. Earthworms don't have eyes, and therefore cannot see. They have light receptors under their skin that help them to detect what environment they are in. 17. A worm's skin is designed to be sensitive to touch and chemicals. 18. The only function of the earthworm's simple brain is to direct it to and from light. It's brain is so simple that if it is removed, the earthworm hardly shows any behavoiral changes. 19. An earthworm has five hearts. 20. An earthworm processes oxygen by filtering it through its skin. It has no lungs. This very permeable skin is the reason that an earthworm dries out so easily. 21. Earthworms are hermaphroditic, having both male and female genetalia. 22. Earthworms range from a few centimeters to about 3 feet in length. 23. Nightcrawlers are often used as fish bait. They are not used as fertilizing worms, because they are very difficult to breed. 24. Worms have roamed the planet for over 120 million years. 25. Aristotle referred to earthworms as "the intestines of the earth. All knowledge is power. Prove this knowledge isn't. |

I rather like earthworms. I try not to step on them after a rainstorm. Snails, on the other hand, are a pleasure to stomp. |

Perhaps snails are such a pleasure to stomp because they give that very satisfying crunch along with the squish... just a thought. |
